cardinal air · ruled by Venus

Libra

Libra is cardinal air and the only sign whose symbol is an object rather than a creature, which the tradition treats as significant: this is the sign of measurement and proportion. It is associated with fairness, partnership and an instinct for what will keep the peace. Its difficulty is that seeing both sides genuinely and clearly makes committing to one of them harder, not easier.

The Libra card: its glyph and creature drawn in gold line work on a deep navy ground.

The dates move by a day either way depending on the year, because the tropical year is not a whole number of days. Sites that print fixed dates and say nothing are the reason people believe they are on a cusp.

What cardinal air means

air: Works through ideas and other people. Sociable, articulate, and inclined to think its way around a feeling.

cardinal: Starts things. The first sign of each season, associated with initiative and with an impatience for the follow-through.

Every sign is one element and one modality, and no two signs share both. That pairing is most of what separates Libra from the other two air signs.

Six ways to have Libra

Being “an Libra” nearly always means having the Sun here. It is one placement out of about forty, and the others in this sign describe something quite different. This is usually the reason a Sun sign reads as not quite right.

Sun in Libra

An identity worked out in relation to other people rather than in isolation. Associated with charm, fairness and a real talent for making situations work, and with a difficulty knowing what one wants when nobody else is in the room. The cost is a habit of agreement that quietly accumulates into resentment.

Identity, vitality and the direction you are growing in

Moon in Libra

Needs harmony in order to feel settled, and is genuinely destabilised by conflict. Read as accommodating, socially perceptive and reluctant to state a preference, with the traditional caution that keeping the peace and avoiding the subject look identical from outside.

Emotional needs, instinct, and what has to be in place before you feel settled

Rising in Libra

Comes across as pleasant, poised and easy to talk to. First impressions tend to be of somebody agreeable and well presented, and the tradition associates this Ascendant with a natural courtesy that can make the person harder to read than they intend.

How you come across, and the first impression you make before anyone knows you

Mercury in Libra

Thinks comparatively, and rarely reaches a conclusion without having argued the other side first. Associated with fairness, diplomacy and good judgement, and with a genuine slowness to decide that other people mistake for evasion.

How you think, learn and put things into words

Venus in Libra

Venus rules Libra, so relating here is the main event. Read as romantic, considerate and happiest in partnership, with a strong aesthetic sense and a real dislike of ugliness in any form. The traditional caution is being in love with the arrangement rather than the person.

What you value, what attracts you, and how you behave once attracted

Mars in Libra

Dislikes conflict and is surprisingly good at it. Read as drive that works through persuasion and negotiation rather than force, with anger that arrives late, politely, and often as a very calm statement of exactly what is wrong. Mars is in detriment here, which the tradition reads as effort that has to justify itself before it can act.

Drive, anger, appetite, and how you go after what you want

The rest of the chart in Libra

Fourteen more placements, in descending order of how personal they are. The slowest of them are shared with everybody born within years of you, and each one says so.

The two that set the terms

Jupiter and Saturn move slowly enough to be shared with an age group and quickly enough to still be yours. The tradition reads them as a pair: where it is easy and where it is not.

Jupiter in Libra

Growth through other people. Associated with luck arriving through partnership, an easy social generosity, and a genuine belief that most things can be settled fairly. The excess is agreeing to more than can be delivered, because refusing feels ungracious.

Where things come easily, and what you are inclined to overdo

Saturn in Libra

Saturn is exalted in Libra, which the tradition treats as its most constructive placement. Associated with fairness applied consistently rather than conveniently, commitments taken seriously, and a deliberate approach to partnership that other people come to rely on.

What you find hard, and what you get good at by doing it anyway

The three you share with your generation

Uranus, Neptune and Pluto take between seven and twenty one years to cross a sign. Everybody your age has the same one, so these describe a cohort rather than a person, and the dates are given so you can see that for yourself.

Uranus in Libra

Roughly 1968 to 1975. Disruption in partnership. Associated with a generation that renegotiated marriage, divorce and what two people owe each other, and with an unwillingness to accept an arrangement simply because it is the conventional one.

Where your generation broke the pattern, shared with everyone born within about seven years of you

Neptune in Libra

Roughly 1942 to 1957. The ideal is the relationship. Read as a generation that romanticised partnership and equality, and that had to find out where an ideal of harmony quietly becomes an unwillingness to name a problem.

What your generation idealised, and where it could not see clearly

Pluto in Libra

Roughly 1971 to 1984. Power in relationship. Read as the generation that renegotiated marriage and divorce, and that had to rebuild what a partnership is on terms nobody had handed down to them.

What your generation was made to rebuild from the ground up

The lunar nodes

Two ends of one axis, always exactly opposite. The tradition reads the South Node as what is already easy and the North Node as the direction that is not.

North Node in Libra

Growth towards other people. Associated with learning to consult, to compromise, and to be genuinely altered by somebody else's position, none of which arrives easily.

The direction the tradition reads as growth, and the one that never feels natural

South Node in Libra

The comfortable retreat is into accommodation. Read as a habit of adjusting to whoever is in the room, and of a peace kept consistently at your own expense.

What already comes easily, and what you retreat into under pressure

The other points

Chiron, Lilith, the Part of Fortune and the four main asteroids. Later additions to the tradition, all of them, and read as specific rather than central.

Chiron in Libra

The sore point is relationship, and whether being liked and being yourself can be the same thing. The usefulness is a real fairness towards people who are not being treated fairly.

The sore point that does not fully close, and what you become useful to other people through

Lilith in Libra

What is not apologised for is the demand for fairness. Associated with a refusal to keep the peace at any price, and with a charm that is not the same thing as agreement.

What you refuse to apologise for

Part of Fortune in Libra

Read as ease found with one other person, in fair arrangements, and in surroundings that have been made pleasant rather than simply left as they were.

Where the chart says ease is found, calculated rather than observed

Ceres in Libra

Care is given as fairness and company: nobody left out, nothing allowed to become awkward. It is received as being consulted and treated as an equal.

How you look after people, and how you want to be looked after

Pallas in Libra

The strategy is diplomatic and aesthetic: find the arrangement that balances, and use the fact that both sides would like to be seen as reasonable.

How you see a pattern and go about solving a problem

Juno in Libra

Juno in the sign of partnership itself. What is wanted is a genuine equal: fairness, courtesy, and a relationship that works as a pair rather than as two schedules.

What you want from a committed partnership

Vesta in Libra

The devotion is to the relationship, or to the art of the arrangement. Associated with a focus on getting the balance of something precisely right.

What you give yourself to completely, and what you keep private

Early, middle or late Libra

The sign divides into three parts of ten degrees, the decans, and the tradition reads them differently. Which one is yours depends on the degree of your Sun rather than on the date alone.
