fixed air · ruled by Uranus, and Saturn traditionally

Aquarius

Aquarius is fixed air, and the combination explains most of it: sociable and principled, and completely immovable once it has decided something. It is associated with independence, systems, reform and a genuine concern for people in general. Its difficulty is the distance, since a sign this good at seeing the pattern is often less comfortable with the individual standing in front of it.

Ruling planetUranus, and Saturn traditionally

Modern astrology gives Aquarius to Uranus; traditional astrology gives it to Saturn. The Saturn rulership explains the sign's stubbornness better than the Uranus one does.

The dates move by a day either way depending on the year, because the tropical year is not a whole number of days. Sites that print fixed dates and say nothing are the reason people believe they are on a cusp.

What fixed air means

air: Works through ideas and other people. Sociable, articulate, and inclined to think its way around a feeling.

fixed: Holds things. The middle of each season, associated with persistence and with a real difficulty changing course.

Every sign is one element and one modality, and no two signs share both. That pairing is most of what separates Aquarius from the other two air signs.

Six ways to have Aquarius

Being “an Aquarius” nearly always means having the Sun here. It is one placement out of about forty, and the others in this sign describe something quite different. This is usually the reason a Sun sign reads as not quite right.

Sun in Aquarius

An identity built on not being told. Associated with originality, principle and real loyalty to friends, and with an immovability that the airy reputation of the sign disguises entirely. The cost is that being different can stop being a consequence of the views and start being the point.

Identity, vitality and the direction you are growing in

Moon in Aquarius

Handles feeling by stepping back from it and examining it. Read as emotionally independent, uncomfortable with displays, and better at supporting somebody practically than at sitting in the feeling with them. Space here is a genuine need rather than a rejection.

Emotional needs, instinct, and what has to be in place before you feel settled

Rising in Aquarius

Comes across as friendly, slightly unconventional and a little detached. First impressions tend to be of somebody interesting and hard to categorise, and the tradition associates this Ascendant with an ease in a group and a reserve one to one.

How you come across, and the first impression you make before anyone knows you

Mercury in Aquarius

Thinks in systems and arrives at conclusions other people have not considered. Associated with originality, an interest in how things work and a stubborn independence of view, with the traditional caution being attachment to a position because it is one's own.

How you think, learn and put things into words

Venus in Aquarius

Attracted to the unusual, and needs freedom inside closeness. Read as loyal, unconventional and more comfortable with friendship than with intensity, with the traditional caution that detachment offered as respect for space is not always received that way.

What you value, what attracts you, and how you behave once attracted

Mars in Aquarius

Acts on principle and at its own pace. Read as drive directed at changing something rather than winning something, with a stubbornness that outlasts most opposition and an anger that expresses as cold withdrawal rather than heat.

The rest of the chart in Aquarius

Fourteen more placements, in descending order of how personal they are. The slowest of them are shared with everybody born within years of you, and each one says so.

The two that set the terms

Jupiter and Saturn move slowly enough to be shared with an age group and quickly enough to still be yours. The tradition reads them as a pair: where it is easy and where it is not.

Jupiter in Aquarius

Growth through the group and through the idea. Associated with generosity aimed at people in general rather than at anybody in particular, and with a broad tolerance that can read as detachment from close range.

Where things come easily, and what you are inclined to overdo

Saturn in Aquarius

Saturn ruled Aquarius in the traditional scheme, before Uranus was known. Associated with structure applied to the group, principles held to at a personal cost, and a sense of standing outside the circle that becomes useful rather than only painful.

What you find hard, and what you get good at by doing it anyway

The three you share with your generation

Uranus, Neptune and Pluto take between seven and twenty one years to cross a sign. Everybody your age has the same one, so these describe a cohort rather than a person, and the dates are given so you can see that for yourself.

Uranus in Aquarius

Roughly 1995 to 2003. Uranus in the sign it rules in the modern scheme, and read as its clearest expression: a generation defined by networks rather than institutions, and with a native fluency in change.

Where your generation broke the pattern, shared with everyone born within about seven years of you

Neptune in Aquarius

Roughly 1998 to 2012. The ideal is the network. Associated with a generation for whom connection is the promise and the illusion at the same time, and with a shared dream of a world organised without a centre.

What your generation idealised, and where it could not see clearly

Pluto in Aquarius

Roughly 2023 to 2044. Power through the network and the collective. The tradition reads this as a rebuilding of how groups organise themselves, which is a description of a process and not a forecast of how it ends.

What your generation was made to rebuild from the ground up

The lunar nodes

Two ends of one axis, always exactly opposite. The tradition reads the South Node as what is already easy and the North Node as the direction that is not.

North Node in Aquarius

Growth towards the group and towards a degree of detachment. Associated with letting go of needing the recognition to be personal, and with contributing to something that will not carry your name.

The direction the tradition reads as growth, and the one that never feels natural

South Node in Aquarius

The comfortable retreat is into distance. Read as a habit of standing slightly outside, observing the group rather than being in it, and calling that objectivity.

What already comes easily, and what you retreat into under pressure

The other points

Chiron, Lilith, the Part of Fortune and the four main asteroids. Later additions to the tradition, all of them, and read as specific rather than central.

Chiron in Aquarius

The sore point is belonging to the group at all. The usefulness is a genuine welcome for whoever is standing outside it, because you know exactly what that is like.

The sore point that does not fully close, and what you become useful to other people through

Lilith in Aquarius

What is not apologised for is difference. Associated with a refusal to be normalised, and with a coolness towards any group that asks for conformity as the price of entry.

What you refuse to apologise for

Part of Fortune in Aquarius

Read as ease found among a group of your own choosing, in work that serves more people than you will ever meet, and in not having to be conventional to be included.

Where the chart says ease is found, calculated rather than observed

Ceres in Aquarius

Care is given even-handedly and at a slight distance, often to a group rather than a person. It is received as being accepted exactly as you are without having to be understood.

How you look after people, and how you want to be looked after

Pallas in Aquarius

The strategy is to invert the assumption. Associated with solutions that look obvious afterwards and unwelcome at the time, and with a genuine indifference to how it has always been done.

How you see a pattern and go about solving a problem

Juno in Aquarius

What is wanted is friendship first, and an unconventional arrangement if the conventional one does not fit: freedom inside the commitment rather than instead of it.

What you want from a committed partnership

Vesta in Aquarius

The devotion is to the cause. Associated with a focus that serves the group rather than the self, and with an ability to keep going without personal reward.

What you give yourself to completely, and what you keep private

Early, middle or late Aquarius

The sign divides into three parts of ten degrees, the decans, and the tradition reads them differently. Which one is yours depends on the degree of your Sun rather than on the date alone.
