Sun in astrology
The Sun is the centre of a birth chart and the one placement almost everybody already knows. It describes the self you are growing into rather than the personality you arrive with, which is why a Sun sign so often fits better at forty than at fourteen.

The Sun and Moon are not planets astronomically. In astrology they are the two lights, and they carry more weight than anything else in a chart.
What the Sun means in a birth chart
The Sun is the organising principle of a chart. Where the Moon describes what you need and Mercury describes how you think, the Sun describes what the whole arrangement is for. Traditional astrology treats it as the light everything else is read against.
The most useful reframing is that a Sun sign is a direction rather than a description. It is what you are moving toward, and it is common to recognise very little of it in yourself at twenty and most of it at fifty. If your Sun sign has never fitted, that is worth reading before deciding astrology does not work: the Moon and the Ascendant are usually what a stranger meets first.
The Sun by sign
The sign colours how the Sun expresses. In a fire sign it wants to act and be seen doing it. In earth it wants to build something with a result you can point at. In air it works through ideas and other people. In water it moves through feeling and attachment, and is often the least willing to be watched while doing it.

The Sun by house
The house is where this shows up in a life, and it needs an accurate birth time. The Sun in the 10th tends to make a career or a public role the arena where identity gets worked out. In the 4th, the same drive turns inward and lands on home, family and privacy.
A house placement is often more recognisable than a sign placement, and it is the first thing worth checking when a Sun sign reads as wrong.
Strength and difficulty
The Sun is dignified in Leo, which it rules, and exalted in Aries. Both give it an easy path to expression. It is in detriment in Aquarius and in fall in Libra, the two signs most oriented toward the group and the partner, where the tradition says a solar identity has to work harder to be its own thing rather than a function of who it is with.
None of that is a verdict. A planet in fall describes a placement that costs effort, and effort is usually where a chart turns out to be interesting.
Why the Sun is never retrograde
Retrograde motion is an apparent effect: a planet looks as though it is moving backwards because the Earth is overtaking it, or being overtaken. The Sun is what we orbit, so from here it never appears to reverse. The Moon does not either. Any horoscope that mentions a Sun retrograde is not describing the sky.
Sun in astrocartography
A birth chart says where Sun sits. An astrocartography map says where on Earth it was strongest at the moment you were born. Sun draws four lines across the world, one for each angle, and they do not mean the same thing as each other.

- Is my Sun sign the same as my star sign?
- Yes. "Star sign" is the popular name for the sign the Sun was in when you were born, which is what a newspaper horoscope uses. It is one placement out of roughly forty in a full chart.
- Why does my Sun sign not feel like me?
- Two common reasons. The Sun describes what you are growing into rather than how you come across, so the Ascendant and Moon usually fit a first impression better. And if you were born within a day or two of a sign change, the Sun may actually be in the neighbouring sign; only an exact birth date and time settles it.
- Can the Sun be in two signs?
- No. It is in one sign at any moment. The idea of being "on the cusp" is popular and not technical: the Sun crosses from one sign into the next at a precise time, and a chart calculated for your birth moment will say which side of it you were on.
