Moon in astrology
The Moon is the fastest thing in a chart and the most private. It describes what you need rather than what you want, how you react before you have decided how to react, and what has to be in place before you feel safe enough to be yourself.

The Sun and Moon are not planets astronomically. In astrology they are the two lights, and they carry more weight than anything else in a chart.
What the Moon means in a birth chart
If the Sun is the direction, the Moon is the equipment you were issued. It governs the reaction that arrives before thought: what you reach for when tired, what you find comforting, what you do with a feeling you would rather not have.
It is also the placement people recognise fastest in themselves, and the one they are least likely to describe out loud. A Sun sign is something you tell people. A Moon sign is usually something they only see if they live with you.
Why the birth time matters more here
The Moon moves about half a degree an hour and changes sign every two and a half days. A birth time wrong by twelve hours can leave the Moon in the same sign but several degrees away; a birth date without any time at all can leave it genuinely ambiguous between two signs.
This is the single strongest argument for finding your exact time. Casting for noon is a reasonable fallback for everything else in a chart and a coin toss for the Moon.
The Moon by sign and house
The sign describes the shape of the need. In earth signs it tends toward the physical and the reliable: routine, food, a settled place. In water it needs emotional contact and privacy in roughly equal measure. In air it needs to talk, and in fire it needs movement, which is why sitting still with a difficult feeling is often the hardest ask.
The house says where you go looking for that settling, and the two together are more useful than either alone. A Moon in a fire sign in the 4th house wants excitement and wants it at home, which is a specific and slightly contradictory thing to be.
Strength and difficulty
The Moon rules Cancer and is exalted in Taurus, the two placements the tradition considers most at ease with having needs at all. It is in detriment in Capricorn and in fall in Scorpio.
Neither of those is bad news. Both describe a Moon that does not find its own reactions easy to accept: Capricorn tends to manage feeling rather than feel it, Scorpio tends to intensify it and hold it out of sight. What the tradition is pointing at is the effort involved, not a defect.
The Moon and the body
Traditional astrology ties the Moon to bodily rhythm: sleep, appetite, the tides of energy across a day. That is association rather than mechanism, and this site does not claim otherwise. Recorded as a pattern to notice rather than a cause to act on.
