Grand trine

What it is
Three planets spaced evenly around the wheel, each 120 degrees from the other two. The triangle is equilateral, and because a trine spans four signs the three normally land in the same element: three fire signs, three earth, three air or three water.
Where one planet has crossed into a neighbouring sign the trines still hold by degree and the element no longer matches. That is a dissociate grand trine, and the tradition reads it as the same pattern with the elemental theme removed.
How it reads
Ease, and the tradition is unusually consistent that ease is not the same as advantage. The three planets cooperate without being asked to, so whatever they govern tends to work without effort and without much attention.
The standard caution is as old as the reading itself: a closed circuit gives nothing a reason to develop. Trines describe what comes naturally, and what comes naturally is often the thing a person never bothers to build on. Several traditional authors treat an unaspected grand trine as a genuine liability for exactly that reason.
The element carries most of the specific content. A fire grand trine and a water grand trine are associated with completely different things, and the element is the first thing to read after the shape.
There is no apex. All three points are equal, and that is part of the reading rather than an omission: nothing in the figure demands attention, which is exactly why the pattern is so easy to leave alone.
How common it actually is
Far less common than its reputation, and this is the number that most surprised the measurement. It appears in 5.2 per cent of charts, one in nineteen, which makes it less than half as frequent as the yod that popular writing calls rare and fated.
What to watch for
Being sold as luck. The tradition is more cautious about this pattern than any popular treatment of it, and the caution is the interesting part.
