Saturn in astrology

Saturn has the worst reputation in astrology and the most defensible one. It describes limit, time and consequence: the places where nothing arrives without being built, where you are hardest on yourself, and where competence eventually becomes real rather than claimed.

Jupiter and Saturn sit between the personal and the generational. A Jupiter sign is shared with everybody born within about a year of you, a Saturn sign with everybody born within two and a half.

What Saturn means in a birth chart

Saturn marks where you meet resistance and where resistance is the point. Its house and sign describe the area of life you are least able to improvise your way through, which tends to be the area you doubt yourself in longest and are most solid in by the end.

The tradition calls it the greater malefic, and that framing has aged badly. The observable pattern is not misfortune but cost: Saturn describes what has a price attached, paid in time and repetition. What it gives back is the only kind of confidence that does not evaporate under pressure.

The Saturn return

Saturn takes about twenty-nine and a half years to return to where it was when you were born, which puts the first return between roughly twenty-eight and thirty-one, and the second around fifty-eight to sixty.

It is the best-known transit in astrology and the most consistently reported. The association is with structures being tested: work, relationships and commitments that were adopted rather than chosen tend not to survive it intact. Whether that is astrology or simply what happens when a person reaches thirty is a fair question, and this site does not claim to settle it.

Strength and difficulty

Saturn rules Capricorn and, traditionally, Aquarius, and is exalted in Libra, where limit takes the form of fairness and proportion rather than restriction.

It is in detriment in Cancer and Leo and in fall in Aries. Those are the signs of feeling, display and immediate action, and Saturn slows all three. The reading is not that those placements fail, but that spontaneity, warmth or self-expression are the things that had to be worked at rather than assumed.

Saturn by house

The house is where Saturn actually shows up, and it is usually recognisable without any interpretation at all. It is the area of life you have quietly assumed you are worse at than other people.

In the 7th it lands on partnership, and the tradition reads it as commitment that arrives late and holds. In the 10th it lands on career, where progress is slow, unglamorous and cumulative rather than sudden. In the 3rd it lands on speech and learning, and is the classic placement for somebody who was slow to read and ends up writing for a living.

The pattern the tradition claims, and the one worth testing against your own life rather than accepting, is that Saturn houses invert with time. What you were worst at at twenty is often what you are trusted for at fifty, precisely because it was never automatic and had to be understood.

Saturn in astrocartography

A birth chart says where Saturn sits. An astrocartography map says where on Earth it was strongest at the moment you were born. Saturn draws four lines across the world, one for each angle, and they do not mean the same thing as each other.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Saturn return and when does it happen?
Saturn returning to the position it held at your birth, which takes about twenty-nine and a half years. The first falls somewhere between twenty-eight and thirty-one, the second around fifty-eight to sixty.
Is Saturn a bad planet?
It is traditionally called the greater malefic, which is a description of difficulty rather than of harm. Saturn describes what costs time and effort. The tradition also treats it as the source of anything durable in a chart.

Where is your Saturn?

None of this describes you until you know which sign and house your Saturn actually occupies. The chart is free, and it is calculated from the Swiss Ephemeris rather than from a template.
