Parans: where two lines cross

A paran is a latitude at which two planets were angular at the same moment. On a map it looks like two lines crossing. The surprising part, and the part that makes parans worth understanding, is that a paran holds all the way around the world at that latitude, not only at the point where the lines appear to meet.

What a paran is

The word comes from paranatellonta, a classical term for stars rising together. In modern practice a paran is the latitude at which one planet is on one angle at the same instant that another planet is on another angle.

Because both conditions depend on latitude, the pairing is a property of the latitude rather than of the single point where the two lines happen to intersect on the map. Two planets that pair at 51 degrees north pair at 51 degrees north everywhere: in London, in Kyiv, in Calgary and in the middle of the Pacific.

Why that is counterintuitive

Everything else on an astrocartography map is about being near a line, which is a question of distance in two directions. A paran is not. It asks only how far north or south you are, and ignores longitude completely.

The practical consequence is that a crossing you notice over one city applies to a band right around the globe, and the visible intersection is not privileged. It is simply where two curves happened to be drawn on the same piece of paper.

How parans are read

A paran is treated as two planetary functions being brought into contact in a place, in much the way an aspect brings them into contact in a chart. A Venus and Jupiter paran is read as a latitude where ease and expansion coincide. A Mars and Saturn paran is read as one where drive meets resistance, which the tradition describes as demanding rather than unlucky.

The usual orb is one degree of latitude, about 110 km. That is the received figure rather than a measured one, and this site uses it because it is the convention, not because it has been demonstrated.

Pairs of the same planet do not count. Your own Venus MC line crossing your own Venus rising line is the geometry of a single planet rather than two planets meeting, and reading it as a paran is a common beginner error.

How much weight to give them

Less than a line, in most practice. Parans are a refinement, and they are most useful for distinguishing between two places that are otherwise similar on your map rather than for choosing a continent.

They also inherit the same dependency on birth time as everything else in the technique, and arguably more sharply: a one degree band is narrow enough that an imprecise time can move you out of it entirely.
